Paradise
I created this series of mugs during forest fire season in the Northwest Territories. During that time, the majority of NWT residents needed to evacuate their homes. Anxious communities fled from this situation, unsure of whether or not they would recover. After returning and settling back into the normal rhythm of life, there remains some question as to how bad things are going to get. At this time, we are still racing to precipice of environmental collapse. For me, these mugs serve as both a reminder of the experience, and also a reminder of the uncertainty of the future.
Each mug was slab-formed, and individually hand-painted with mason stains. They were made with plainsman earthenware clay, which is mined in Alberta. The handles were over-glazed with gold lustre. To preserve the lustre, I suggest hand-washing this piece. Also, the lustre contains real gold, and will react in a microwave.
